The images depicting phytoplankton are from the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) that operated from 1979 to 1986. The CZCS images are a seasonal composite, meaning numerous images were combined to produce the image you see. The sea surface temperature images are from NOAA satellites carrying the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and are a monthly composite.

Comparing the differences between the Caribbean and the Eastern United States is a start. To move further use the Interactive Region Selection set up at the Goddard Space Flight Center by Gene Carl Feldman. The system is designed to allow you to look at the ocean color data for any region in the world.
